From creation in 1948 until break up in the mid 1990’s British Rail (BR) ran a hugely varied set of passenger rolling stock. In the early days it inherited the carriages of the big four companies (LMS, LNER, SR & GWR) which gave it a huge variety to manage and maintain. Over the years BR worked towards replacing this inheritance with a more modern and standardised set over the network.

During it’s time BR also rebranded itself on several occasions and this lends itself to even more variety in possible passenger rolling stock configurations.
